Are Escape Rooms Safe?
Yes! Generally speaking, escape rooms are a safe and fun activity for most people.
Common Safety Concerns
- Locked Doors: Despite the name, doors are almost never actually locked. At my location, there is literally no way to lock the doors.
- Physical Strain: Escape rooms don’t require strength, agility, or athletic ability. They mostly rely on logic, observation, and teamwork.
- Flashing Lights: Some rooms may use rapidly flashing lights. If you are sensitive to these, ask ahead or choose a different room.
- Live Actors: These are rare and usually found only in big-budget productions (such as the Saw Escape Room in Las Vegas).
How Rooms Keep You Safe
- Game Master Oversight: Your game master will explain the rules before the game; during the game they will monitor you the entire time, both to give hints and to ensure safety.
- Design Process: Game designers identify and remove hazards during testing. The most unpredictable factor is often the players themselves!
- No Tolerance for Intoxication: Most escape rooms won’t allow alcohol consumption or public intoxication to ensure guests stay safe.
- Emergency Exits: Hallways will have clear exits, and staff can guide you out if needed.
The Bottom Line
No escape room operator wants a guest to get hurt. Safety measures are built into the design, and staff are trained to keep you safe. If you ever have concerns, ask the escape room directly: they’ve likely heard your question before and will be happy to help.
